In 1861, the Government of India introduced its first paper money: ₹ 10 note in 1864, ₹ 5 note in 1872, ₹ 10,000 note in 1899, ₹ 100 note in 1900, ₹ 50 note in 1905, ₹ 500 note in 1907 and ₹ 1,000 note in 1909. In 1917, ₹ 1 and ₹ 2 1 ⁄ 2 notes were introduced.
It is one of the highest-value circulating banknotes in the world, worth around 537 USD; 3,902 CNY; 79,165 JPY; 430 GBP, or 479 CHF as of September 2023. The note is used in the 25 countries which have the euro as their sole currency, with a population of about 343 million.

With the introduction of banknotes and coins in euros, those in lire ceased to be legal tender as of 28 February 2002, following two months of dual circulation. The conversion of lira notes and coins into euros was terminated on 7 December 2011 (Decree Law 201/2011, Article 26). The notes account for one-third of the value of all euro banknotes in circulation, but still many shops in Europe refuse to accept them. The first series of euro banknotes was introduced over 20 years ago and the second series started entering into circulation in 2013. We are now in the process of developing future euro banknotes. This is an opportunity to make them also more attractive, relatable and inclusive for all Europeans, including people with a visual impairment.
