I avoid taking supplements if I can. I've slowly started incorporating little habits into my diet that would hit my Vitamin goals. For instance, a glass of lemon water with Chia seeds every morning takes care of my Vitamin C and Omega 3. I would love to use something that would say ok, you've eaten this, this and this so far.
Fish and fish oil supplements are not an effective source of omega 3. All the evidence points to getting omega 3 from plants, not fish (which incidentally accumulate their omega 3 from eating plants at sea). That's for sure sounds like symptoms of iron and copper deficiencies, or iodine deficiency. But if you were dosing 25-50mg of zinc everyday for 2 years, iron and copper deficiencies wouldn't be surprising. Try getting copper from cocoa powder, iron with vitamin C once a week, 150mg iodine with selenium. scorpi0_ix.
The fish oil had more EPA (330 mg vs. 220 mg DHA), which according to one study causes anxiety. The Algae one I linked to in the top post has more DHA, though (250 mg DHA and 125 mg EPA), which also caused the same side effects. The only other thing that comes to mind is both also have about Vitamin E in each capsule (12 mg in the fish omega 3
In addition, people with polymorphisms (variations in DNA sequence which alter function of gene) in serotonin-related genes may require a therapeutic dose of omega-3 which is hard to safely achieve with fish. In some cases, people with bipolar and schizophrenia lowered the severity of some symptoms with several grams (up to 6g) per day.
Trans fats may cause an Omega 3 deficiency: Omega 3s are primarily known for their anti-inflammatory effects, usually secondary to DHA and EPA. But there's more to it than that. Trans fats block the conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA. [3] This means that in some, trans fats can upset Omega 3 function in a similar manner to a deficiency.
Regardless, studies have demonstrated little to no effect from DHA alone on anxiety and depression. The same goes for EPA. The effects on anxiety and depression are seen in supplements containing 2:1 EPA to DHA. Who knows why. Theories abound. 2:1 EPA to DHA seems to be the best ratio for fish oil overall.
